I wrote Itipurú with two audiences in mind: the beginning reader and the beginning reader with reading difficulties.Īdapting Itipurú into Easy Reading has been an adventure of comprehensibility. Trish’s illustrations are heartwarming and the monster is really scary! The book has been illustrated by New Zealand artist Trish Donald. It is a fantasy tale with a universal message about bravery in the face of seemingly impossible challenges, sacrifice for loved ones and faith. The story combines elements about New Zealand’s nature and endangered animals with elements of Maori mythology. The monster is hungry and wants to eat penguins, poor Itipurú! He needs to escape and he needs to find his family, will he make it? Itipurú needs to survive, but there is a terrible monster in the ocean. But Itipurú doesn’t escape, he can’t swim. ![]() When an earthquake destroys the island, all the penguins in the colony enter the ocean and escape. He wants to swim and he wants to eat alone like the other bigger penguins. Itipurú is the smallest penguin in a colony of blue penguins in New Zealand. In total there are 132 words and the book is super easy to read. Itipurú y el monstruo del océano is a beginner level 1 graded reader written with just 77 different English words and 55 transparent words (similar words between Spanish and English).
